Ella Jane Fitzgerald (April 25, 1917-June 15, 1996), nicknamed Lady Ella (First Lady of Song), an American singer, is recognized as one of the most important jazz singers in the 20th century, together with Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan.
With a voice spanning three octaves, she is famous for her pure timbre, almost perfect segmentation and intonation. Among them, her scat singing shows the talent of improvisation like trumpet sound. She is also widely regarded as one of the best performers of the song Great American Songbook.
Ella won 13 Grammy Awards and was awarded the National Medal of Art and the Presidential Medal of Freedom by former US Presidents Ronald Reagan and George ·H·W· Bush respectively.
